Save money, Use Blogger

By Noo Yawka

When designing a website, most people nowadays assume there really isn't a choice. WordPress is the overwhelming choice of most amateur website builders who don't want to spend money for custom design.

I have no complaints about WordPress. I have seen many good websites that came out of the WordPress box. Used correctly, WordPress handles the overwhelming majority of design issues for most users.

But I don't use WordPress. I use Blogger. Yes, that boring system foisted on the public by Google.

When most people think of Blogger they think of the cookie-cutter templates beginning newbies use for their first blog. Nowadays Blogger lets users choose from about a dozen designs. Yes, most are quite boring designs. And yes, they are immediately recognized by most web surfers as freebie beginners' templates.

But users of Blogger do not have to limit themselves to the handful of designs Blogger offers. There are now hundreds of designs that work on the Blogger platform that are available for free download. Just google the words 'free blogger templates' and you will step into a world of many choices. Yes, the designs are not always the very latest, but damn most of them are very good. A lot of them are direct copies of popular WordPress templates converted to the Blogger platform.

They do most things WordPress templates do. And Blogger has things worked out so changes to the website can be made much quicker than changes can be made to WordPress templates and websites. That might not matter to a person who has only one or two websites. But if, like me, you have dozens of websites, it matters a great deal that changes can be made much more quickly on Blogger templates than WordPress templates.

Oh, did I mention one other benefit of Blogger templates? If you use Blogger's Custom Website feature, you do not need to pay for hosting. Google hosts your websites free. For nothing, Without cost.

Try that with WordPress. That's a savings of about $100 a year, using as a benchmark the average cost of full hosting service.

I agree with you that Blogger is a nice platform. But Wordpress kicks ass when it comes to stand-alone blogging software. It has become more of a framework than "just" a CMS.

Again, I'm not dismissing WordPress entirely. It has some good points. But if 1) you want to save money 2) have many domains that need updates and changes quickly and easily and 3) don't need the latest and fanciest and most complicated bell and whistle for your websites, I'll still take Blogger.

Thanks for sharing, Noo.
I've haven't had the courage to start blogging, but I know that I have to.
Best wishes.

Put on your deep diving gear and dive right in! If you start today by next week you'll look back and wonder why you didn't start sooner.

Great intel Noo. Thanks for sharing this great information. Glad to see you back.

Since I wrote the post many things have changed at Blogger. They have added a lot of new templates, most of which are terrific. But be careful when you use Blogger. They have a tendency of removing your site UNLESS you have original content. That's not a problem if you have original content. But they don't like it if all you do is scrape someone else's content and put it on your blog.

Thank you for this information, Noo. I don't have a website but my hubby wants me to work one up for him. Yikes! More mountains to conquer.

The first blog is always the most difficult. Start now, enjoy the many new templates Blogger has added, and get your toes wet. After you build a site or two or three, it gets easy and you'll be able to add more in your sleep, it's so easy.

art you suggesting that having a domain like Iam2cheap2springforacustomdomain.blogger.com is better that a domain like HeyICareaboutmybusinessesimage.com If so you are deserving of your client base.

What kind of business are you talking about? If you're in a business competing against 5000 other people selling the same widgets, yes, blogspot in your domain name is not impressive. But I've witnessed several people who started "idea" websites on blogspot which became popular, so later they switched to .com Depends on what you're selling.
