Metropolitan Museum Streaker By Noo Yawka of HimalayaIT A nude model made headlines in August 2009 by running au naturel through one of the exhibition rooms of the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York. The model timed her exercise in self exposure to be filmed by a photographer who specializes in memorializing incidents of public nudity. The model was caught by Museum guards and arrested. It is too early to tell whether the authorities in New York City will actually fine her for her behavior. The incident was the cause of tons of commentary, including many letters to editors. Many of the letter writers pegged their comments on the irony of a living nude woman being arrested for showing her body in a museum chock full of artists' depictions of the naked body. The conclusion that most of the writers reached is that the woman should suffer no legal consequences for her actions. If pictures can be nude, so should the admirers of the pictures, they said. If both the artworks on the walls of museums and the admirers of the artworks are permitted to be nude, that raises a question none of the letter writers asked: why do people have to pay entrance fees to museums to see something--the naked body--that can be seen free anywhere else in the world? Museums charging money to see naked bodies makes them kind of pimps, when looked at in this light. If people can see naked bodies at no charge, how dare museums traffic in such a common object--and dare to charge obscene fees? The museum in question asks an entrance fee of $20.00. The lawyers who defend the nude streaker model should also ask the Museum for a cut of the day's take. If her naked body is equal to the naked bodies on the walls, she deserves to profit from it too. It's only fair.
