Housecleaning Ritual In India By Noo Yawka The entrance way of a well-kept house in India is swept every morning. The custom is to sweep the accumulated dust into the street in front of the house. When that job is finished, the sweeper makes a chalk drawing on the pathway in front of the front door or gate. This gangoli or rangoli (I'm not sure which is the correct word) is supposed to be a signal to the gods that the household has swept its dirt away so the house deserves to be trouble-free for the day. The gangoli design is often quite elaborate, although it can be simple if the housekeeper is not artistically talented. Choice of design is up the sweeper. There are ancient books of designs and there are artists who execute design work for less-than-talented householders. Design is done in chalk, which also has the virtue of keeping ants away. Very interesting! I believe that the African women have a similar custom .. something that I'll have to look up.
